Assistant Provost for Strategic Faculty Initiatives
Shruti Rana is the assistant provost for Strategic Faculty Initiatives and professor of law at the University of Missouri School of Law. In her role in the Provost’s office, Rana supports faculty development, success, and inclusion by providing expertise, research, and resources for faculty education and development, and developing strategic initiatives for faculty across campus.
Specific duties that she fulfills include:
- Facilitate Connection, a faculty retention program
- Coordinate faculty mentoring efforts across campus, including Mentoring at Mizzou
- Lead Mizzou’s Aspire Alliance & iChange Network efforts
- Facilitate Mizzou’s Professional Development Council & Faculty Success Council
- Manage applications for faculty support initiatives, including the Faculty Success Program (NCFDD)
- Develop strategic faculty initiatives related to faculty success, research, development and support
- Support faculty recruitment, retention, and promotion efforts
- Other duties as assigned
Before serving in the Provost’s office, Rana was Assistant Vice Chancellor for Inclusive Excellence and Strategic Initiatives at Mizzou, where she led the Office of Inclusive Excellence and developed initiatives for faculty and graduate student development and success. Prior to joining Mizzou, she served as senior assistant dean for curricular and undergraduate affairs and diversity officer at the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies, Indiana University Bloomington, where she was also a professor and director of the International Law & Institutions Program. At Indiana University, Rana developed and strengthened curricular, experiential and global learning opportunities and partnerships, and worked on school and campus initiatives to enhance student success and retention as well as equity and inclusion for faculty and students. Rana is also a legal scholar who has published widely in law journals and other media in the areas of international law, global governance and equality, and has been a primary investigator on several major grants including most recently a multinational collaboration under an Australian Discovery Project grant.
Rana has a broad range of leadership and other experience in academia, legal practice and community organizations. She was a professor at the University of Maryland Law School, where she co-developed the school’s international law clinic, and a visiting professor at the UC Berkeley School of Law. She has also served as Of Counsel at Brooks Pierce LLP, where she helped grow the firm’s international law practice, and as a Social Affairs Officer at the United Nations, where she analyzed international and domestic treaty obligations. Rana’s other legal experience includes serving as a judicial law clerk for the Hon. James R. Browning at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and practicing in the areas of international, corporate and regulatory law at Williams & Connolly LLP in Washington, DC and Quinn Emanuel LLP in San Francisco. She obtained her JD from Columbia Law School, MSc from the London School of Economics, and BA from the University of California, Berkeley. Rana has also served on a number of professional and community boards and actively volunteers in her local communities.
