The Campus Writing Program (CWP) recently celebrated their 40th anniversary with a reception at the Conley House on September 18. The theme of the program was “Why Writing Still Matters,” commemorated by remarks from inaugural director, Doug Hunt, former director, Marty Townsend, and supportive faculty and students. Many former faculty who couldn’t attend sent emails of support to the CWP.
“I am humbled by the leadership and expertise that established such a lasting pathway for us to continue their work,” said Amy Lannin, director of the Campus Writing Program, “Writing and teaching writing build relationships that allow us to know our students, their thinking, and what they are learning.”
Lannin also appreciates the support of Mizzou’s administration and the Provost’s office in ensuring that the foundations that the original CWP leaders started will be able to continue into the future. Many spoke about the CWP being a model for other institutions to support the teaching of writing.

Associate Provost for Academic Programs Brian Houston spoke at the event about his experience teaching writing intensive courses and believes that they are a feature that sets us apart from other universities.
“Mizzou writing-intensive courses provide a high-impact experience for students we can be proud of,” he said.
The Campus Writing Program offers many supports for faculty, but the presence of students and their testimonials at this celebration shows that it also impacts student success and sets them on a path towards developing a lifelong writing practice.
