Words, Phrases and Abbreviations You Need to Know

ADD/DROP: Process for changing/dropping classes. This process starts in your advisor's/Dean's office.

A&S: This refers to either the Arts and Science Building next to Brady Commons, or to the College of Arts and Science, located in Lowry Hall.

BUS: The College of Business located in Cornell Hall.

BLUE BOOK: An examination booklet that is often required by professors for midterm, essay, and final exams. It can be purchased at the University Bookstore in various sizes.

CA: A Community Advisor in a residence hall.

CLEP: College Level Examination Program to test for advanced placement and credit. More information is available at the Test Administration Services, 220 Parker Hall (882-4801).

CUM GPA: Your cumulative grade point average, representing the grades for all courses taken within the University of Missouri system.

DA: The Desk Attendant at the information desk of each residence hall or complex.

DE: Departmental Exams offered for credit through the Testing Administration Services, 220 Parker Hall (882-4801).

DOUBLE MAJOR: Specializing in two areas of concentration.

EE or DOUBLE E: Electrical Engineering

GCB: The General Classroom Building, location of many undergraduate classes, located across from Brady Commons.

GPA: Grade Point Average (calculated average)

GPC: Graduate and Professional Council part of student government. All graduate and professional students are members.

HES: The College of Human and Environmental Sciences located in Gwynn Hall.

SHP: The School of Health Professions located in Lewis Hall.

Honors College: Special classes for students meeting specific academic requirements. Located in Lowry Hall (882-3893).

ID: Student Identification Card. Student ID cards are made at the University Bookstore (882-1871).

IFC: Interfraternity Council, the governing body for the North-American Interfraternity Conference fraternities at MU.

JESSE: Jesse Hall, MU's primary administration building, located at the south end of Francis Quadrangle.

THE MANEATER: The campus student newspaper, published twice weekly during the school year.

MGC: Multi-Cultural Greek Council, the umbrella organization for fraternities and sororities that seek to promote cultural awareness at MU.

MINOR: Specialization in an area requiring fewer hours than a major.

MSA: Missouri Students Association. All undergraduates are members of this student government.

NPHC: National Pan-Hellenic Council, the governing body for the historically African-American fraternities and sororities at MU.

PASS/FAIL: Grading system whereby grades of A B C are assigned an "S" (satisfactory), and D and F are assigned a U (unsatisfactory).

PHA: Panhellenic Association, the governing body for the National Panhellenic Conference sororities at MU.

R: This letter designation in the Schedule of Classes catalog stands for Thursday. "T" stands for Tuesday.

RHA: Residence Hall Association, the residence hall's governing body.

RHC: Residence Hall Coordinator.

RES LIFE: Residential Life Office.

RUSH: To Apply for membership in a fraternity or sorority or to be invited to join an organization on campus.

TA: Teaching Assistant

TRUMAN: The name of the University of Missouri's Mascot, Truman the Tiger!
