Garnett S. Stokes, Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs

Garnett S. Stokes

Dr. Garnett S. Stokes is the provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs and provost at the University of Missouri. Dr. Stokes came to MU in February of 2015 and is excited about opportunities for building on the excellence already in place.

As Provost, Dr. Stokes has been integral to shaping the University of Missouri’s campus leadership. Of the 13 deans currently serving, she has hired six and appointed two others as interim. She has also selected important Provost staff positions including the Associate Provost, Vice Provost for Enrollment Management and the Assistant Vice Provost for Title IX Administration as well as interim positions for the Director of MU Libraries and the Vice Provost for International Programs. Her selections reflect her commitment to a diverse leadership team and will have impact on our campus for years to come.

In addition, under Dr. Stokes’s leadership the Civil Rights and Title IX Office was established, which centralized reports and investigations of discrimination and provided more process and rigor around how cases of discrimination and sexual assault are handled at Mizzou.

Prior to joining MU, Dr. Stokes served as provost and executive vice president for academic affairs and interim president at Florida State University (FSU), a public research university in Tallahassee. Prior to joining FSU, Dr. Stokes served at the University of Georgia as a faculty member, chair of the department of psychology, and dean of the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences.

Dr. Stokes earned a B.A. in psychology from Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tennessee, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Georgia in industrial/organizational psychology. Her research has focused on personnel selection and promotion, specifically the use of biographical information in job selection and promotion decisions. As a consultant, Stokes has assisted businesses, government agencies and Fortune 500 companies in the development of their hiring procedures.

She is a fellow of the Association for Psychological Science, the American Psychological Association, and the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology.
